The rate of surgical procedures is increasing annually. In 2010, 51.4 million inpatient surgeries were performed in the United States; 53.3 million procedures were performed in ambulatory surgery centers. Considered one of NQF's largest measure portfolios, this project identified and endorsed measures for surgery. Many of the measures in the portfolio currently are used in public and/or private accountability and quality improvement programs; however, significant gaps remain in the topic area of surgical measurement. This report focuses on the evaluation of 9 newly submitted and 20 surgery measures undergoing maintenance review for suitability as voluntary consensus standards.
